Klager's Meats |
The Arbour family that owns Klager's Meats & Produce say they sell the best steaks in town! And their burgers and sausages are made with no fillers or binders. See their website for the long list of Ontario meats that are available at this old fashion butcher shop.
A hand-made sign in the window lets locals know when seasonal fruit and vegetable are in from the neighbour's farms. As you stand there reading the sign, the scent of fresh baked bread and buns from their bakery will pull you in the door.
Tourists looking for an impromptu culinary adventure could pick up picnic necessities such as bread, meat and cheese for sandwiches, or have them make up your own special creation to go. If you don't want sandwiches they sell sundry groceries as well as their own fresh home-made meatpies, cabbage rolls, meat balls, cooked roast beef with gravy and Stoney Creek Dairy ice cream for dessert.
They also have a line of Greaves jams which are made with local fruit from the Niagara Region. This stop allows locals and tourists to purchase Greaves jams and marmalades without having to take the trip to Niagara-on-the-Lake where the main shop is located. For families with picky children, choose a yummy Greaves jam to add to the perfect peanut butter and jelly sandwich!
Fred Klager built the store in the 1920s and Jim Williams ran it as a butcher's shop until 1934, when Gordon Klager took it over. This makes it the oldest business still operating in Fonthill.
