GENERAL INFORMATION
The Merchant Alehouse is a beloved brewpub and restaurant in the heart of downtown St. Catharines. Situated on St.Paul Street, The "Merch" is a great place to grab a delicious homebrewed pint, all of which are brewed on the premises. Some of the ones they feature include their own Ironwood cider, Blond Bombshell, Old Time Hockey Ale, and Drunken Money Oatmeal Stout. They also feature a number of seasonal beers such as the Blueberry Wheat, Strawberry Blond and ever so popular Headless Horsemen Pumpkin Ale. In addition they carry a number of drinks by other microbreweries on tap including Niagara's Best Beer, Taps Brewery, and the Great Lakes Brewing Company.
The food is fantastic and features a number of options including many pub style foods such as fish and chips, oatmeal stout burgers, beer battered pickles, numerous sandwiches and salads, pizzas, nachos, chicken fingers and more. Reasonably priced, there are many vegetarian options and the brewpub has a great atmosphere and provides snappy service.
The Merchant Ale House is a great place to end a nice fall day with a delicious pint of their Pumpkin Ale, a favourite of many. The Pumpkin Ale usually becomes available in early October and lasts until supplies run out, usually in the end of November. They add roasted pumpkin with the grain in the mash tun to produce a uniquely flavoured wort. The wort is then boiled with a light addition of Goulding hops cinnamon and nutmeg to accent the beer. It's not one to miss!
The Merchant Ale House has a warm and friendly atmosphere, featuring a wooden decor and big open windows in the front facing out onto St.Paul Street.
Depending on what evenings you choose to go on it can be busy, but it's always worth the trip and there are plenty of tables. On some nights you might also find talented musicians playing live music in the evenings. This is most often free of charge. It's a good choice if you just want to go get a drink and play some darts, or go grab a meal.
As any bar, it requires patrons to be 19 years of age or over.
