Merritt Trail And Merritt Trail Linkage |

In honour of William Hamilton Merritt, the man who directed the creation of the First Welland Canal (1829), the Merritt Trail begins in Port Dalhousie on Lake Ontario at the remnants of what was once a vital connection from lake-to-lake. The trail follows the path of the former canals, including mills and old locks that once depended on them. In Thorold, the Merritt Trail unites with the present Fourth Welland Canal, and continues across to Port Colborne in Lake Erie. Parts of this trail comprise the Welland Canal Parkway/Welland Canal Recreational Waterway, and boast a smooth, maintained path that can be utilized for those who require wheeled accessibility.
